On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, High Commissioner Emmanuel Hategeka presented his credentials to President Prithvirajsing Roopun of Mauritius, marking a significant moment in the deepening of bilateral ties between the two nations.

Based in Pretoria, South Africa, and accredited to Mauritius, High Commissioner Hategeka also engaged in high-level discussions with Honourable Maneesh Gobin, Mauritius’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade. The talks underscored the mutual commitment to bolstering cooperation across various sectors.

Both Minister Gobin and High Commissioner Hategeka expressed satisfaction with the current state of Rwanda-Mauritius relations, highlighting the gradual expansion of collaboration in multiple fields. They emphasized the need to further enhance these ties by promoting increased exchanges in areas of shared interest.

A key focus of their discussions was on strengthening financial cooperation between the two nations. Both parties acknowledged the importance of this partnership and agreed to explore new avenues for collaboration in the financial services sector, a pillar of both economies.

Additionally, the two dignitaries explored opportunities to enhance tourism and professional development, with particular attention given to Rwanda’s growing hospitality sector. They discussed the potential for young Rwandan professionals to receive practical training in Mauritius, leveraging the island nation’s expertise in tourism management and services.

Another crucial topic of discussion was the importance of improving air connectivity between Rwanda and Mauritius. Enhanced flight routes, they noted, would facilitate smoother movement of people, boost tourism, and create new opportunities for business partnerships.

During the meeting, Minister Gobin praised Rwanda’s remarkable economic growth and its standing as one of Africa’s most competitive economies. He pointed to Rwanda as a development model for the continent, commending the country’s visionary leadership and dynamic policies.

Minister Gobin also took the opportunity to inform High Commissioner Hategeka of Mauritius’ submission of Mr. Anil Kumarsingh Gayan, former Minister, as a candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Mauritius expressed hope for Rwanda’s support in this candidacy, further solidifying the cooperative spirit between the two nations.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their dedication to fostering strong and mutually beneficial relations, laying the groundwork for deeper cooperation in the future.
