MARKET WATCH: Rwanda’s franc is facing ongoing pressure against the dollar, trading at ~1,479 per USD at the central bank, with commercial desks quoting near 1,490.

A weaker franc raises the cost of importing foreign goods, raw materials, and energy. Local companies face higher operational expenses and dollar liquidity shortages, forcing them to either absorb shrinking profit margins or pass costs onto consumers through higher prices.

For importers, this means, spending more francs to purchase the US dollars needed to buy goods overseas. This inflates the landed cost of key inputs like machinery, construction materials, fuel, and packaged goods. Businesses too face a tough choice, when it comes to absorb the higher foreign currency costs which shrinks their profit margins or pass those costs onto consumers via higher retail prices, driving up domestic inflation.
