Rwanda is among three countries set to benefit from a 5,000-metric-tonne rice shipment delivered by DP World and the United Nations World Food Programme to support communities facing acute food insecurity.

The shipment arrived at the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania after being transported from DP World’s Mundra Terminal in India. The World Food Programme will move the food overland through its regional logistics network to humanitarian operations in Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The rice is expected to enable food assistance for more than 14,200 additional people for one month, according to DP World and WFP.

The assistance comes as humanitarian needs remain high across the region. More than 27 million people in the DRC are facing acute food insecurity amid conflict and displacement, while Burundi is dealing with additional pressure after families fled insecurity in eastern DRC.

Rwanda continues to host refugees and asylum seekers from neighboring countries, adding to the humanitarian demand that WFP and its partners are working to address.

The shipment is part of a broader partnership between DP World and WFP that was established in 2025 to improve the efficiency, reach and sustainability of humanitarian supply chains.

DP World provided in-kind logistics support through its Shipping Solutions business, formerly known as Unifeeder, which transported the cargo from India to Tanzania.

The company’s Shipping Solutions network operates more than 100 container vessels, connects more than 200 ports and makes more than 16,000 port calls each year through coastal, short-sea and feeder services.

The partnership is also intended to strengthen disaster preparedness, regional logistics capacity and longer-term recovery efforts beyond emergency food deliveries.

Ganesh Raj, DP World’s global chief operating officer for marine services, said the shipment showed how commercial logistics networks can help keep critical supplies moving during humanitarian emergencies.

Alex Marianelli, WFP’s director of supply chain, said private-sector partnerships are increasingly important as humanitarian needs continue to grow while available resources remain constrained.

The latest shipment is expected to help WFP extend food assistance to vulnerable communities across the three countries more efficiently.
