Two dead, 8 injured after wall collapses in Nyamasheke

Two people died on Monday, October 2, 2023 while 8 were injured and rushed to the hospital after a wall collapsed in Gihombo Sector, Nyamasheke district.

According to reports from the district authorities, the accident happened during the process of constructing Rwamatamu Genocide Memorial Located in Gihombo Sector.

The acting Mayor of Nyamasheke District, Joseph Desire Muhayeyezu has said that this disaster happened on Monday at about 10h30 when the victims were building a memorial center, when the wall stumbled and buried them alive. The two bodies were later retrieved and 8 were rushed to Mugonero hospital to receive treatment.

“After hearing about the accident, we rushed to the scene with a combined team to search for the other victims. Miraculously we rescued 8 unfortunately two did not survive.”

Regarding the survivors, he  added that out of 8, four were seriously injured.

The failure of this wall was due to the fact that the soil was soft and due to heavy rains from the past days.
