The Federal Republic of Somalia has become the 8th member state of the East African Community (EAC) after depositing the Instrument of Ratification to the Secretary General of EAC at block’s headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The Horn of Africa country sent a high-level delegation led by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi to Arusha, to deposite the instrument Peter Mathuki, at the EAC offices.
The Treaty of Accession ratified in Entebbe, Uganda last December was signed by Somalia’s President Sheikh Hassan Mohamud and South Sudan’s President and Chairperson of EAC, Salva Kiir Mayardit, in a ceremony witnessed by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.
In line with the EAC Admission Procedure for new members, Dr. Mathuki pronounced the Federal Republic of Somalia as a new member of the Community.
The Secretary General will subsequently inform Somalia in writing that the new member has deposited the Instrument of Ratification of the Treaty of Accession and is a full member of the Community [Article 153(1) of the EAC Treaty]. The Secretary General will then deposit the Treaty of Accession with the African Union and the United Nations expressing the new members commitment to be bound by the Treaty [Article 153(2) of the Treaty].
Somalia joins seven (7) other Partner States including the Republic of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, Republic of Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania.
