Etincelles FC players have finally received their outstanding salaries for January and February 2024, the club confirmed on Tuesday. This comes after a period of financial difficulties that led to delayed payments and protests from the team’s fans.
A player, speaking anonymously, expressed relief: “Yes, they paid us. They paid for two months.” The player’s focus has now shifted to their upcoming league match against Mukura VS on Friday.
However, the situation surrounding Etincelles FC remains complex. While the payment issue seems resolved for now, the club has also suspended three fans for six months.
These fans reportedly held signs during a recent match, highlighting the club’s financial struggles and demanding intervention from the Rubavu District.
The Rubavu based club confirmed the suspensions through Twagirayezu Vincent: “All three have been suspended for six months, barred from involvement with Etincelles FC and attending any other matches in Rwanda.”
The legality and reach of the suspension remain unclear. The fans’ club president claims the decision originated from the fans themselves, while Vincent suggests the club may have additional reasons. One cited reason is that the fans allegedly mocked the Rubavu district and threatened to abandon the team.
Etincelles FC currently sits 15th in the league with 22 points, battling to avoid relegation. While the payment of salaries eases one concern, the fan suspension adds another layer of complexity to the club’s situation.
