Dates and routes for this 2023 edition of Rwanda Epic Mountain Bike Rwanda (MTB) have been revealed with the race set to offer participants a unique and exhilarating experience.
According to organizers, the 5-day race is open to all participants who wish either to join the full 65km stage from Nyabihu to Rubavu, or the shorter 20km ride within Rubavu.
“The adventure is more than just a race because participants will traverse approximately 300km covering five stages at altitudes above 5000 meters and will be navigating through the rough terrains.”
“The aim of the race is not just sport related but also to showcase Rwanda’s natural beauty, culture, and potential as a top destination for adventure tourism.” organizers’ statement read.
Besides positioning Rwanda as a hub for major international sporting events, the race will boost the local economy by attracting international participants and spectators, on top of promoting local businesses and tourism tractions.
Further, participants will cover 8km in the opening prologue stage, the highlight of this route is the urban downhill section that will take you through narrow streets, stairs, and sharp turns.
Stage 2 which is dubbed the Queen Stage, a masterpiece, a monster but mostly, a beauty! see participants taking to the foot of the Volcanoes (Virungas).
On Day-3, competitors will face a faster, deeper dive into the countryside and the beautiful northern region of the country while experiencing endless bumpy lava stone sections as part of the menu for stage 3.
Riders will have to race in a high altitude on Day-4 before concluding the last and final stage on Rwanda’s highest dirt roads that literally drive into lake Kivu.
According to organizers, stage 5 is also the most crowded, one with loud cheerings and support from the local fans.
