The Governor of Eastern Province in Rwanda, and former Commissioner General of Police Emmanuel Gasana has been arrested by the country’s investigation bureau (RIB) on accusations of abuse of his authority.
The announcement for his arrest came a few hours after a notice of suspension by Prime Minister.
According to the RIB, he was arrested after allegedly committing criminal acts while governor of the Eastern Province.
The investigation bureau has also stated that the investigation is still ongoing, and that they will announce further information depending on findings of their investigation.
Gasana has been governor of the Eastern Province for about two years.
Previously, he served as the governor of Southern Province, commissioner general of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Inspector General of Police from 2009 to 2018, and prior to that had served in Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF).
