The roads from Kigali-Huye and Nyamagabe to Rusizi have been damaged by the heavy rains falling in Southern Province, authorities said on Wednesday.

Rwanda National Police identified the damaged roads as the Huye-Nyamagabe road at Nkungu near Nyamagabe town in a message on its twitter wall on Wednesday morning, October 6, 2021.

Adding that the Kigali-Huye-Nyamagabe-Rusizi road is impassable is the reason why it is declared closed.

Some of the transport companies working along that route; Huye-Nyamagabe have confirmed that the road is impassable to the extent that at a certain point passengers had to move out of the vehicles to cross on foot.

The repair for the 53-kilometer Huye-Kitabi dirt road from Huye Town to Nyamagabe to Kitabi Sector was started in 2018 before being completed in August 2020.

Earlier this week, Rwanda Meteorology Agency said heavy rainfall is expected in the northern and Nyamagabe Districts, with moderate rainfall expected in different parts of the country between 80 and 140 mm, in the next five to eight days.
