Heavy rains and floods have destroyed a section of Huye-Nyamagabe road paralyzing transport along the route on Monday.
Authorities in Southern Province have said that the road is temporarily closed to traffic since it was damaged across the Mwogo river at Kigoma sector in Karambi cell.
At present, passenger vehicles are stopping on the other side of the crack, crossing on foot, while transport companies are exchanging passengers for easy movement across the district.
Governor of Southern Province, Alice Kayitesi told local media that rehabilitation of the Huye-Nyamagabe impassable road is expected but heavy rains could slow down the work.
She advice’s public transport buses and verticals transporting goods to currently use an alternative route via Nkungu-Kigoma, Rwaniro and Rugarama to Rusatira.
Huye-Nyamagabe road was constructed by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), work started in October 2017.
“It is the CRBC that has to rehabilitate the damaged road” the Governor said.
The downpour follows a warning by the Rwanda Meteorology Agency which said that four districts and parts of the country including the Southern Province will experience above-normal rainfall up to January 20.
