CARAES Ndera Neuropsychiatric Teaching Hospital says it is burdened with the problem of overstaying patients who even after completing their treatment can’t leave the hospital because they don’t remember where they came from.
Management and staff at the Ndera confirm that most people are brought in by security agencies suffering from mental disorders.
Officials at the facility points out that some of the patients arrived at hospital between 1995 and 2022, and after being treated they could not commit to memory where they stayed before or where they came from.
Those who have this problem at the Huye and Kigali branches are said to be about 74, including 47 men and 27 women.
The other challenge faced by the hospital is that of taking care of them but also dressing them. Some are foreigners from neighboring countries.
The Minister of State, in Charge of Social Affairs at the Ministry of Local Government, Marie Assoumpta Ingabire says that they are going to work with the hospital to find the families of these residents.
“Government will find a place for those without anywhere to live or relatives and will continue to take care of them as usual,” She said.
Regarding non-nationals, she promised that they will work with relevant authorities to see that they are reunited with families in their respective countries.
