A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the Nigerian national team as star striker Victor Osimhen is doubtful for their crucial Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against South Africa on Wednesday.
According to a statement released by the team on Monday, Osimhen is suffering from abdominal discomfort and did not travel with the rest of the squad to Bouaké, the city where the match will be held.
While there is a chance he could still join the team if cleared by the medical staff by Tuesday morning, his absence would be a major blow for the Super Eagles.
Despite only scoring one goal in the tournament so far, Osimhen has been a key figure for Nigeria, forming a potent attacking trio with Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon. Their partnership has been instrumental in propelling the team to their 16th AFCON semi-final appearance.
Head coach Augustine Eguavoen will have to make a crucial decision if Osimhen is unavailable. Possible replacements could include Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho, or Taiwo Awoniyi.
The match against South Africa is a crucial one for Nigeria, who are aiming to reach their fifth AFCON final. The winner will face either Cameroon or Senegal in Sunday’s final.
