Kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in the City of Kigali have been temporarily closed starting Monday, January 18 as a precautionary measure to curb the resurgence of COVID-19 in the country.

The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) in a statement on Sunday announced the closure of schools for at least two weeks.

A tweet from the ministry said, “Communique by the Ministry of Education in partnership with the Ministry of Health to all stakeholders, measure taken to further contain the spread of Covid-19, especially in the City of #Kigali.”

“All nursery, primary and secondary schools (public and private) will be closed in the City of Kigali, effective 18 January 2021. Remote learning is highly encouraged.” Communique by the Ministry of Education said.

The same statement specifies that boarding students and schools outside Kigali will continue studies as usual, respecting COVID-19 preventive measures.

This latest restriction does not affect universities and will be reviewed in two weeks after a preliminary analysis by health officials.
