APR football club has posted a note of apology to fans after the Army football side threw away a golden opportunity to defeat Somalia-based Gaadiidka FC in the first CAF Champions League preliminary round.

To stand a better chance, the Army needed to win its opening game against Gaadiidka FC, but the match ended in a 1-1 draw at Kigali Pele Stadium.

First-half goals by Muhammad Hussein put the visitors ahead in the 32nd minute. Two minutes into the second half, Victor Mbaoma levelled the score.

APR FC spectators booed during the game. In what has become somewhat of a tradition whenever the army side disappoints during a match, the supporters directed their chants at players and coaches.

In an attempt to maintain some semblance of positivity after a disastrous start to the season, APR FC management apologized to supporters on social media on Monday, August 21st, 2023.

“The APR management extends heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated fans for their unwavering support. The season has just only begun, offering ample opportunity for improvement. It’s crucial to bear in mind that forging a resilient team identity requires time and dedicated fight” the statement released on official social site read.

To ease the backlash, the club further called for calm and unity urging the fans to continue rallying behind the players and promising that behind the scenes, they’re working tirelessly to build a competitive squad.

The draw follows a frustration in the Super Cup, which they lost to rivals Rayon Sports FC just a week ago.

The return leg with Gaadiidka FC is scheduled to be played on 24th August at the same venue.
