Ugandan rally crew of Yasin Nasser and Ali Katumba are now sitting top on the Africa Rally Championship leaderboard after clinching victory in the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally on Sunday in Jinja on Sunday.
The Moil Rally Team clinched the Pearl of Africa Rally which is the third round of ARC in the Ford Fiesta R5.
Yasin Nasser set a hot early pace through the morning loop of the 2023 Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally on Saturday, with the top three drivers blanketed by less than 120 seconds.
Nasser picked up the initiative first during the opening 25 km section dedicated to fallen Zambian rally legend Muna Singh Sr.
He pushed his Ford Fiesta R5 to set the fastest time of 21:36.70, 38 seconds ahead of hot favourite Jas Mangat, with defending national champion Byron Rugomoka a further 120 seconds behind.
Mangat came back fighting in what quickly turned into a two-way fight for the lead, winning the second section 17 seconds ahead of Nasser.
Nasser responded quite well through the first run of SCOUL, replenishing the 17 seconds he lost in the previous section.
Yassin Nasser was left in pole position when Mangat later became one of the major casualties, together with Innocent Bwamiki, and Ronald Ssebuguzi.
Yasin and Katumba now have 54points on top of the ARC leaderboard.
Jas Mangat and Joseph Kamya settled for a third position. They sit in second spot on the ARC leader board with 42 points.
Kenya’s Rio Smith and Riyaz Ismail finished in second position. Hassan Alwi came fourth, with Mubiru Duncan ‘Kikankane’ topping the top five positions.
