The Rwanda taekwondo national team arrived in Dakar, Senegal ahead of the Africa taekwondo championship which is scheduled on June 5th-6th.

A team of two females, a male as well as officials left the country on Tuesday for the grade 4 competition that will be used to rank the players from across the continent.

Notably, Team Rwanda will also be eyeing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic wildcard slot that will be up for grabs in Dakar. No Rwandan player has secured a qualification for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The three taekwondo players are: Alain Ndacyayisenga, Umurerwa Nadege and Jean Paul Sekanyambo. The two coaches are Bagire Alain Irene and Zura Mushambokazi.

Ndacyayisenga from Police taekwondo team will compete in the under-57 kg female category, 18-year-old Nadege from Dream Fighters taekwondo club is set to participate in her under-63 kg adult debut.

Nadege won the gold medal at the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) Zone V Youth Games held in Huye district in 2019.

Twenty-one year old Sekanyambo is representing Rwanda for the second time, he competed in England in 2019.

Rwanda Taekwondo Federation (RTF) has said that the goal is to win medals.
