The women’s national football team, She Amavubi, have been eliminated from the race to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games after losing 2-1 on aggregate to Ethiopia in the second qualifying round.
The teams drew 1-1 in the return leg at Dire Dawa Stadium in Ethiopia on October 13, 2026, sending Ethiopia through to the next round.
Mesay Temesgen scored for Ethiopia, while Evelyne Ishimwe Mizero found the net for Rwanda. However, the draw was not enough for She Amavubi to overturn their first-leg deficit.
Ethiopia won the first leg 1-0 at Kigali Pelé Stadium on October 7. The decisive goal came in first-half stoppage time when Rwanda’s Lydia Uzayisenga scored an own goal.
The 2-1 aggregate victory ended Rwanda’s campaign to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles, United States.
