The Ministry of Education on Monday rewarded top students who performed well in the Advanced level (senior six), Year-3 teachers training colleges, and Level-5 for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools.
The results were released on Monday by the Ministry of Education, candidates sat for the exams in July for the first time in two years following the suspension of schools to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The best senior six candidates was Mugisha Abdul Karim Mugisha from Riviera High School located in Gasabo – Kigali City, he passed with distinctions in Physics Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM).
The second best was student Kelia Gatete Umuhuza, from Gashora Girls Academy located in Bugesera district, in the Eastern Province. Umuhuza studied Mathematics, Physics, and Geography (MPG).
Umuhuza attributes her good performance to the parents and teachers.
“What helped me perform well was that I put a lot of effort into my classes. I did what I had to do in school, including concentrating on my homework handed out by the teachers,” Umuhuza said.
The third best student in advanced level is Anaise Marie Reginald Uwonakunze from Ecole de Science Byimana, located in Ruhango district in the Southern province.
The Minister of Education, Dr Valentine Uwamariya , said that 47,638 candidates sat for the advanced level exams this year. Of these, 40,435 passed the exams, an equivalency of 85.3 percent in the general performance while 6.964 students (14.7 percent) failed.
22,686 candidates sat for the vocational and technical national exams (TVET schools), 21,523. 21,768 passed (95.7 percent) and 976 failed (4.3 percent).
Dieu Merci Mugisha from Ecole Technique Saint Kizito de Save is the best student in the TVET schools; he was followed by Jean Claude Twizeyimana from Groupe Scolaire Benjamin Tito Robert Rwamiko (GS BTR Rwamiko).
For the Year-3 teachers training colleges, Theogene Nsengiyumva is the first from TTC Muhanga was rewarded as the best student in the Year 3 teachers training colleges, followed by Gervais Niyogusa from TTC Mururu.
Robert Dusabe from TCC Nyamata located in Bugesera district, Eastern province was rewarded for being the third best student this year.
Dr Uwamariya said the overall performance of the students was good despite the fact that there was a drop in the success rate.
“Overall, the students have done well because when you look at the rate they have achieved it is not the same as in previous years,” he said.
In 2020, the overall knowledge achievement rate was 89.5% while this year it dropped to 85.3%. In Educational Institutions (TTC), the success rate improved to 99.9 percent compared to 2019 when it was 98.2 percent. In vocational and vocational schools it was 91.2% in 2020, now the success rate is 95.7%.
Dr Bahati Bernard, Director of the National Institute for Examinations and Inspection of Schools (NESA), explained that the basic score is determined based on the success of the children in various subjects.
Minister Dr Uwamariya said students who did not get basic grades were eligible to take the state exam as independent candidates.
The students were rewarded with laptops.
