Senators have begun a two-day retreat, during which they are exchanging ideas on the Senate’s responsibilities, implementation, and collaboration with other institutions. Among the topics discussed was the importance of prioritizing the nation’s interests above all.
This message was delivered by the Senate President, Dr. Kalinda Francois Xavier, as he opened the senators’ retreat on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
He stated, “This retreat aims to provide senators with an opportunity to discuss the Senate’s responsibilities and their implementation, with the goal of promoting Rwandan unity, improving the living conditions of citizens, and advancing the nation’s economy.”
He added: “In carrying out our responsibilities, we must prioritize good collaboration with other institutions of our country, remembering that we are all in this together, and that what we put first is the interests of our nation above everything else.”
He highlighted the expectations for the senators’ retreat to better fulfil their responsibilities.
He said: “This retreat is expected to provide us with the tools that empower us to effectively implement our responsibilities and to adopt productive operational strategies appropriate for an institution like the Senate. I believe that the discussions we will have and the ideas we will exchange over these two days will help us refine our direction and strategies for effective operations in the fourth Senate term.”
The discussions focused on the Senate’s origins and what citizens expect from it, the implementation of the Senate’s responsibilities, the government’s second program to accelerate development (NST2) for 2024-2029, and other issues that will arise.
