Senate president, Dr Augustin Iyamuremye has said that the International community abandoned Rwanda when the Tutsi were slaughtered during the genocide, and that countries should stop obstinacy on the mistakes they made and that they should instead help to bring to book genocide perpetrators on their respective territories.
He said that it is not understandable how in 1994 some countries opposed the use of the term genocide to describe what was happening in Rwanda, and that those countries, until now continue to revise such a history.
“Above all that, there are some who opposed the recognition of the genocide by the United Nations, which led us to not being saved from the hands of the killers. However, today people do not have the shame to revise the history of the genocide against the Tutsi by giving it other useless appellations. Such countries should stop sticking to the mistakes they did and instead bring to book genocide perpetrators on their territories”, he said.
He added that “hose representing their countries to Rwanda made a communiqué supporting that CDR could be incorporated into the interim government. On April5,1994 at the United Nations, the Security Council had a session including a member of the extremist party CDR who represented Rwanda. Thy adopted Resolution 909 which stated that if both side do not come to a consent, Peacekeepers would leave in six months”.
He said that this was a message that the international Community abandons Rwanda.
Dr Iyamuremye was speaking on Tuesday 13th April 2021, during the closure of the mourning week for the 27th commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi.
The event took place at the Rebero genocide memorial site where are laid to rest 12 politicians who were leaders within PL, PSD and MDR political parties killed during the Genocide for opposing the Genocide.
Senate President Dr Augustin Iyamuremye said it is important to commemorate these politicians who distanced themselves from the hate and genocide politics, knowing that their lives were at risk.
He however hailed the fact that the International Community established and observes the International day of reflection on the Genocide against the Tutsi.
Dr Jean Damascène Bizimana, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG) recalled the bad politics that led the country to the Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi. He explained that the genocide against the Tutsi was a plot that was masterminded and executed by the bad regime of President Habyarimana.
Dr Bizimana said that the genocidal plot masterminded by bad politicians and political parties that incited to hatred including MRND, which used government institutions in propaganda for hate against the Tutsi.
Among other examples, he gave one of 1992, when Dr Léon Mugesera, when at Kabaya, called for extermination of the Tutsi. Then after, Mathieu Ngirumpatse who was Secretary General of the ruling party MRND, argued that Mugesera would not be prosecuted because he had committed no crime.
Dr Bizimana explained that what continues to be shocking is that there are many so called politicians abroad who did not draw any lesson from the tragedy”.
The event was also graced by the President of the chamber of deputies, Rt Hon Donatille Mukabalisa, the Chief Justice of Rwanda, Rt Hon Dr Faustin Nteziryayo, the Prime Minister of Rwanda , Rt Hon Dr Edouard Ngirente , and the president of IBUKA (umbrella of genocide survivors association) Egide Nkuranga among others.
