Rwanda will on Wednesday take on Kenya, which is ranked 30th in the world and Rwanda is seeking to overturn the dominance from Kenyans in the opening match of the 2024 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup Qualifiers slated in Windhoek, Namibia.
The Rwandan amateur team will battle other continental heavyweights including Zimbabwe which is ranked 11th in the world, plus hosts Namibia (12th), Uganda (23rd), Tanzania (32th) and Nigeria (38th).
Speaking about the qualifiers and the other opponents, Rwanda captain Clinton Rubagumya noted that they will be battling against guys we’ve only ever watched on TV.
“For us, the main challenge really was to get there,” he says
“We know realistically it’s not easy for us to qualify. However, we do feel there is something for us to play for. We may not have a lot to lose but we do have a lot to gain.”
In addition, the skipper added that the dream is reaching the World Cup.
At the inaugural Continental Cup T20 Africa held in June in Nairobi, Rwanda lost to Kenya in all the three meetings.
In the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup Sub-regional Africa “A” qualifiers organized in November last at Gahanga cricket stadium, Rwanda lost to Kenya by nine wickets.
In the other games to be played on Wednesday, Uganda take on Tanzania, Rwanda battle Kenya and Zimbabwe play Namibia. All games start at the same time.
