Rwanda’s wicketkeeper-batter Fanny Utagushimaninde has become the youngest player to score a century in women’s Twenty20 internationals, achieving the milestone at just 15 years and 223 days.
The teenager reached three figures against Ghana during the Nigeria International Women’s T20 tournament on Friday, bringing up her hundred in the 18th over the innings in a standout performance that has drawn attention across the region.
Utagushimaninde’s achievement surpasses the previous record held by Uganda’s Prosscovia Alako, who was 16 years and 233 days old when she scored a T20I century against Mali in 2019.
The knock marks a significant moment for Rwandan cricket, highlighting the rapid progress of young talent in the women’s game in the country. It also comes as teams continue their campaigns in a competitive tournament featuring sides from across Africa, including Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa U-19, and Zimbabwe U-19.
Elsewhere in the competition, Nigeria Women have made a strong start, defeating Zimbabwe Women U-19 by eight wickets after chasing down 81 in just 11.2 overs, while South Africa U-19 Women recorded a dominant 99-run victory over Ghana Women.
Utagushimaninde’s record-breaking innings adds further momentum to Rwanda’s presence in the tournament, with expectations rising around the young side’s performances as the competition progresses.
