Rwanda and Tanzania are looking to deepen cooperation in trade, transport, investment and regional integration, following talks between the two countries’ foreign ministers in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe met his Tanzanian counterpart, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, for discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the neighboring East African Community (EAC) member states.
The meeting brought together senior officials from both sides, including Rwanda’s Director General for Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gisa Teta, and Rwanda’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Gen. Patrick Nyamvumba.
Rwanda’s foreign ministry said the discussions focused on strengthening ties between the two countries, which have maintained close cooperation in areas including trade, transport connectivity, investment and regional affairs.
The talks come amid renewed high-level engagement between Kigali and Dodoma as both governments seek to build on longstanding relations and expand economic cooperation within the EAC framework.
In May, President Paul Kagame visited Tanzania and held talks with President Samia Suluhu Hassan, with the two leaders discussing ways to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment.
During that visit, Kagame described Tanzania as a key partner for Rwanda, particularly because of its role in facilitating access to international markets through transport and trade links.
The Tanzanian president later visited Kigali in a reciprocal trip, further highlighting the growing engagement between the two countries.
Rwanda and Tanzania share close historical, economic and diplomatic ties, strengthened by their geographical proximity and membership in the East African Community. The two countries have cooperation agreements covering sectors such as commerce, infrastructure, transportation and investment.
Sunday’s ministerial meeting is part of continued efforts by both governments to advance bilateral cooperation and strengthen regional integration.
