Rwanda secure a spot in the quarter-finals at African Nations Championship

Rwanda national football team Amavubi put up an impressive game against Togo to secure a spot at the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN). Amavubi finished second behind Morocco, who topped the group with a 5-2 thrashing of Uganda.

Amavubi come from behind to beat Togo in a crunch Group C clash at Limbe Stadium in Cameroon.

To claim all three points to book a place in the quarter-finals at the expense of Togo, Amavubi trailed 2-1 before goals from Jacques Tuyisenge and Ernest Suriga within the space of eight second-half minutes handed them victory.

Togo, who would have gone through with a draw, led the match until Olivier Niyonzima equalized for Rwanda in first-half time. Ernest Sugira then turned the match on his side’s with a third goal of the game that was held on to secure the passage.

In Kigali, fans were over joyed by the win that in some parts of the city people had to move out of their houses onto the streets in the middle of the night in a city that is still under lockdown and curfew.

Some photos shared on social media of the celebrants, many were not wearing masks or respecting Covid-19 preventive measures like social distancing.

Amavubi is scheduled to play its next match on Sunday against the winners of Group D who are playing today, the leading teams in this group are Guinea and Zambia.

The tournament is scheduled to continue today with the conclusion of Group D, after which the quarter-final line-up will be complete.
