The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has announced a public auction of vehicles seized during various police operations. These vehicles, which have remained in police custody for over a month, will be sold off in an upcoming auction.
According to a notice issued on Friday, September 13, 2024, the auction will take place from October 8 to October 10, 2024, at the police parking lot in Gatsata, Kigali.
“The auction will be conducted publicly at the Gatsata parking area,” the notice reads. “Interested buyers will have the opportunity to view the vehicles starting from September 16 until October 3, 2024.”
RNP also reminded vehicle owners whose cars have been impounded to resolve any outstanding issues before the auction date. By law, vehicles held in police custody for more than a month can be auctioned.
Vehicles are commonly seized for various reasons, such as failure to present a valid inspection certificate, traffic violations like speeding or reckless driving, and unpaid fines.
Public transport vehicles and trucks, in particular, are required to undergo mechanical inspections every six months. These inspections evaluate critical systems such as shock absorbers, brakes (including handbrakes), axle play detection, wheel alignment, steering mechanisms, and headlights. Additionally, a visual inspection of the vehicle’s body is conducted, and fuel emissions are tested to ensure compliance with environmental regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
