Rwanda Cycling Federation (Ferwacy) Secretary General Benoit Munyankindi has been arrested following allegations of intentional favoritism and particularistic ties.
The official was detained on Tuesday August 22, after he allegedly “made a decision based on particularistic ties to a document”, according to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
According to Thierry Murangira, RIB spokesperson, the sports official is suspected to have enrolled his wife on the list of the Rwandan delegation departing for the Union Cycling International World Championships held in Glasgow, Scotland last month.
Due to his confinement at the Kimihurura RIB Station in Kigali, Munyankindi could not be reached for a comment.
Abdallah Murenzi, Ferwacy President, is also under investigation according to RIB. But he is not detained.
Last year, two other senior officials at Rwanda National Olympic Committee (RNOSC) were arrested for favoritism and forgery by taking close family members abroad during the recent 2022 Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom.
The suspect Jean de Dieu Mukundiyukuri, the former Executive Director at RNOSC enlisted his wife as part of the official delegation to Birmingham and gave her the title of Administrative Personnel.
The former Head of Rwanda’s mission to the Commonwealth Games, Jean-Jacques Mugisha also put his wife and child on the list, but they were later removed despite securing UK visa documents among others.
