Kenya President William Ruta has been elected as East African Community (EAC) Chairman, taking over from South Sudan counterpart Salva Kiir.

Ruto, who will hold the position for the next one year, was appointed during the 24th Summit of the EAC Head of State in Arusha, Tanzania.

The 24th Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State brought together regional leaders to deliberate on critical issues shaping the future of East Africa.

Held under the theme of the EAC’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, this high-profile summit serves as a platform to reflect on the achievements of the past 25 years while charting a path for deeper regional integration.

Key agenda items include strengthening the region’s economic resilience, advancing peace and security, and promoting initiatives that enhance intra-regional trade and development.
