Paul Rusesabagina, the man whose story inspired the “Hotel Rwanda movie” today appeared again before the court in Kigali.
Rusesabagina who was ordered by the same court on September 17 for preventive detention of 30 days for investigations was back in court but prosecution still wants more time to continue investigations into his crimes.
Addressing the court, the prosecution said that the investigations into the Rusesabagina case have made great progress, but added that it takes even longer to put together the case of the suspect and his co-defendants.
Rusesabagina’s lawyers rejected the arguments put forward by the prosecution to keep him in detention and asked for bail. The defense lawyers said their client’s rights cannot be tainted by delays in the way the prosecution conducts its investigations. He said the remaining investigations should be conducted while the suspect is out of custody.
The court said the decision on the prosecution’s request to extend the suspect’s detention will be announced on Friday, October 23, 2020.
