Paris Saint-Germain edged Bayern Munich 5-4 in a breathtaking Champions League semi-final first leg at the Parc des Princes, in one of the competition’s greatest modern classics.
The two European giants delivered a relentless contest filled with attacking football, dramatic momentum swings and nine goals, the highest-scoring Champions League semi-final since 1960.
Bayern twice went ahead in the opening half through Harry Kane and Michael Olise, but PSG responded through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Joao Neves and an Ousmane Dembele penalty to lead 3-2 at the break.
PSG looked to have sealed the tie after further goals from Kvaratskhelia and Dembele stretched the advantage to 5-2 in the second half.
But Bayern refused to collapse.
Late strikes from Dayot Upamecano and Diaz pulled the German champions back into the contest and ensured the second leg in Munich remains finely balanced.
PSG manager Luis Enrique described it as the most exciting game of his coaching career.
“It was amazing. I think everybody had fun watching the match,” he said.
The match was a refreshing reminder of attacking football at its best, with both sides throwing caution aside and trusting their firepower.
Dembele and Kvaratskhelia starred for PSG, while Kane and Olise were outstanding for Bayern in a match that will live long in Champions League history.
