On Friday, October 4, 2024, Prime Minister Dr. Eduard Ngirente represented President Paul Kagame at a ceremony celebrating 200 years of the Kingdom of Lesotho’s existence and 58 years of its independence.
The event, held in Maseru, highlighted the pride of the people of Lesotho as they reflected on their history, particularly the legacy of King Moshoeshoe I, the first ruler of the kingdom.
This visit by Prime Minister Dr. Ngirente comes at a time when both countries are continuing to expand their diplomatic relations and cooperation.
On December 14, 2022, in Washington, D.C, U.S.A, President Kagame held talks with Lt. Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, the Prime Minister of Lesotho, focusing on enhancing the good relationship between the two countries, particularly in trade and investment promotion.
Rwanda and Lesotho began their relationship in 1983, based on mutual visits and various cooperation agreements signed by both parties.
In 2013, Rwanda and Lesotho signed a partnership agreement aimed at exchanging information and knowledge related to promoting good governance.
Additionally, in August 2021, the Rwandan and Lesotho police signed a cooperation agreement covering various areas. This agreement includes collaboration in combating crimes such as terrorism, drug trafficking, transnational crimes, and building the capacity of both police forces, as well as sharing information and other security expertise.
The agreement also encompasses training exchanges, joint police operations, sharing crime investigation programs, and timely information exchange related to crimes and criminals, as well as combating arms proliferation.
Both entities also agreed to establish a permanent forum for regular meetings to discuss security issues and their challenges for both countries and the region as a whole.
