Rwandan President Paul Kagame and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Felix Tshisekedi are meeting in Nairobi for the first time following the accelerating of ongoing regional efforts for peace in Eastern DR Congo.
The gathering at State House Nairobi is the third Conclave of the East African Community on DR Congo conflicts convened by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In attendance for the meeting are counterparts Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and Salva Kiir of South Sudan.
Meanwhile, Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu is represented by her High Commissioner to Kenya John Stephen Simbachawene.
The EAC meeting comes after a week of rising tension in Eastern DRC, with the government accusing Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels.
Kenyan President Kenyatta has called for an immediate deployment of a new regional military force led by the EAC to try to stop rebel violence in eastern DRC.
