Two miners who were mining precious stones in a deep closed illegal underground mine are reported to have died in Ngororero district.

The miners named Manirakarama and Muchyo Jaen Dieu from Kigali, were mining in a cave located in Muhororo Sector, Rusororo Subdistrict, Buhiro village, near Nyamisa health center.

According to reports, two other men were rescued by the residents in collaboration with authorities after they’re offered air which they breathed to survive in the 100 meter deep cave.

The Mayor of Ngororero District, Christopher Nkusi has confirmed the news saying that the tragic accident happened when a mine collapsed with four miners under the closed illegal mine site formerly owned by Campany NMC.

“Two were killed, and others were rescued,” he pointed out, adding that the mine is illegal and with cooperation from security agencies people are restricted from the site but they deliberately don’t listen.
