The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, took part, on November 24, 2021, in the global conference on inclusive democratic participation to prevent and counter violent extremism.

Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, in cooperation with the Community of Democracies (CD), the Mohammadia League of Scholars, and the National Human Rights Council, the Conference represents a platform to discuss challenges and good practices in terms of preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) through inclusive democratic participation.

In his speech at the opening of the conference, Mr. Bourita noted that inclusive democratic participation today is not only a vehicle for promoting and consolidating democracy, but also a tool for fighting and preventing violent extremism.

He also affirmed that in line with the Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco does not limit itself to combating violent extremism, but has put in place several tools to prevent it, particularly in the case of young people who represent privileged targets of recruitment strategies.

Mr. Bourita stressed that, in order to face the extremist violence of which these young people are victims, a quality, relevant, inclusive and equitable education is required, adding that the role of women in peace keeping and preventing violent extremism is essential. That is why we need their full participation in security decision-making processes, added the minister.

Regarding the digital revolution, Mr. Bourita indicated that channeling social media plays a key role in preventing violent extremism, especially for young people, while taking effective measures in both real and virtual worlds.

He also noted that under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco has made of the consolidation of democracy, and more particularly inclusive democratic participation, the cornerstone of building a modern and democratic society. Morocco is recognized worldwide for its fight against terrorism and radicalization as well as for its efforts in terms of prevention, particularly, the integration of women in peace processes.

It is to be recalled that the inaugural session of this two-day conference took place in the presence of the President of the CNDH, Ms. Amina Bouayach and the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Mr. Thomas E. Garrett, and with the participation, virtually, of the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Bogdan Aurescu, and the Secretary General of the Mohammadia League of Scholars, Mr. Ahmed Abbadi.
