President Paul Kagame arrived in Washington, D.C., where he is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump and participate in the signing of the Washington Accord — a landmark peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Washington Accord, to be formally signed is the result of months of negotiations facilitated by the United States and Qatar. It seeks to bring an end to long-standing tensions between Kigali and Kinshasa.
Under the agreement, Rwanda will withdraw its defensive security measures along the border, while the Congolese government commits to halting all support to the FDLR militia, a group composed of remnants of perpetutuaters of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Beyond security, the accord outlines steps toward enhanced regional economic cooperation, positioning both countries to rebuild trust and strengthen integration within the Great Lakes region.
President Kagame’s presence in Washington underscores the importance Rwanda places on the agreement as a path toward stability, partnership, and long-term peace.
