The Rwanda Meteorology Agency has warned Rwandan to brace for heavy rains expected over the next coming days, that could result in widespread flooding, landslides, and loss of lives and property destruction.
In its latest weather forecast, the agency said that the ongoing heavy rains will continue between November 21-30 period.
According to the forecast, the expected rains will range between 50 and 150 millimeters.
“Due to the heavy rains expected in different parts of the country and which may cause disasters, Meteo Rwanda encourages all Rwandans and institutions responsible for disaster prevention to pay attention and take measures related to dealing with disasters,” said the agency in the forecast.
“The amount of rain expected will be above the average amount of rain that normally falls throughout the country in the mid month of November,” Meteo-Rwanda added.
Heavy rains are expected in different districts which include Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, Rusizi, Nyamasheke, in the West of Huye District, in the South of Karongi, as well as in Rutsiro and the North-western Districts of Rubavu, Nyabihu, Musanze and Burera.
Between 110 and 130 millimeters of rain is expected to fall in parts of the Western and Northern Provinces. East of Gicumbi District will receive rainfall ranging between 90 and 110 millimeters in that period.
Rain between 50 and 70 millimeters is the least, which is expected mostly in Bugesera, Ngoma, Nyagatare and Gatsibo districts will received between 50 and 70 millimeters.
Meteo-Rwanda continues to report that there will be winds with a speed between 4 meters and 8 meters per second, and the temperature will be between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius.
In addition, the weather agency pointed out that flooding is expected near rivers and swamps, landslides, especially mudslides, and mudslides on steep slopes.
