Fuel prices in Rwanda have been increased following Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) attributing the changes to instability of petroleum products on the global market.
The new price per liter of petrol will be Rwf 1,609 from Rwf 1,460, an increase of Rwf 149, diesel increased from Rwf 1,503 to Rwf 1,607 per liter, an increase of Frw 104; according to the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The new prices come into effect for two months from August 8, 2022, a revision that is made every two months in the country.
Dr Ernest Nsabimana, the Minister of Infrastructure Minister revealed that the prices would have risen much more had it not been for the government subsidy scheme. He said the government injected almost Rwf 10 billion to subsidize prices. Had it not been for the subsidy, the price of diesel would be set at Rwf 1,757 while petrol would be set at Frw 1,767.
Minister Nsabimana said fuel prices continue to rise due to the effects of the war between Russia and Ukraine. At the start of the war in February this year, a liter of diesel was pegged at US$0.57 and rose to US$0.97 in July.
The Minister said rising prices in countries with nature reserves went hand in hand with the cost of transport and insurance, but expressed optimism that they would gradually come down.
He stressed that the increase should not affect the price of public transport in the country.
