Fire outbreak has destroyed stores, and goods as the blaze engulfed a commercial building neighboring Musanze bus park, witnesses have said.

A huge blaze began in one of the commercial storied buildings which provides services including restaurants, sending thick plumes of smoke billowing over the bus station on Monday.

The cause of the fire and extent of damage remains unclear but witnesses claimed  the cause was a cooking gas canister explosion that ignited the flames.

The fire is said to have spread to the shops,  destroying computers, chairs and other items in shops.

Three fire bridge vehicles  were called to put out the fire.

Police spokesperson in the Northern Province, SP Jean Bosco Mwiseneza, said that an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and extend of damage.

“What is being done now is to extinguish it”. he added.

This building which is insured, is owned by Jali Investment Company, which is also responsible for the management of the bus park.

The Mayor of Musanze District, Bizimana Hamiss confirmed the incident, and urged owners, especially businesses, to quickly check their houses and see if  electrical cables and other equipment are working properly to prevent further accidents.
