The Rwandan Football Federation (FERWAFA) has announced that the interrupted Peace Cup match between Mukura Victory Sports and Rayon Sports FC will resume on April 22, 2025, at 15:00 at Huye Stadium.
The initial fixture, played on March 16, 2025, was halted in the 27th minute following a complete floodlight failure at Huye Stadium.
According to FERWAFA, investigations revealed the incident was caused by a severe technical fault — a short circuit that disabled both the main power grid and the stadium’s backup generator.
Referee Louis Hakizimana reported that the lights went off at exactly 19:04, and the match could not continue. Technical reports from the Ministry of Sports and the Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL) supported the claim that a system-wide failure occurred due to a fault in one of the floodlight poles.
FERWAFA’s disciplinary committee ruled that the incident qualifies as a “force majeure” under Article 38 of its competition regulations, noting that it was an unforeseeable technical failure and not due to human error or negligence.
Thadée Twagirayezu, President of Association Rayon Sports said, “It’s a decision we just received, but we are not happy with it,”
“What I can say is that we are going to write to FERWAFA to inform them that we are not prepared to play this match. Rules are meant to be respected.” He added
Unconfirmed reports from sources close to the club suggest that Rayon may be unwilling to replay the match, arguing that the fixture should be considered a forfeit. The same sources, which have not been validated by the club, claim Rayon is questioning who will cover the costs associated with the rescheduled game — including transport, accommodation, and other logistical expenses.
The federation has urged both teams to remain professional and committed to fair play as the new date approaches.
The situation remains tense as fans and stakeholders await an official statement from Rayon Sports FC.
