The City of Kigali has issued a stern reminder to all building owners and managers, emphasizing the critical need to maintain operational public handwashing facilities in places where large numbers of people congregate. This mandate applies to both privately owned and government buildings, as well as markets, bus stations, churches, and other public venues.
In an official notice, the city stressed the importance of hand hygiene as a key measure in preventing the spread of diseases, including the Monkeypox virus, which continues to pose a global health threat. The notice emphasizes that all visitors to these places must wash their hands before entry and maintain this practice during their time in the facility.
To ensure compliance, the City of Kigali has commenced inspections to verify that all such facilities are functional and that the handwashing protocols are being strictly followed. Those found in violation of these regulations will face penalties as stipulated by the Kigali City Council in its 2021 directives during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The city’s public health campaign, branded “Wash your hands 24/7. It’s a lifestyle aimed to instill the habit of frequent handwashing as a daily routine among residents and visitors alike.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance public health safety and curb the spread of communicable diseases within the city.
