Burundi ruling party nominated Gen. Evariste Ndayishimiye to replace President Nkurunziza during the party congress.
Burundi’s ruling CNDD-FDD party Congress in Gitega has nominated General Evariste Ndayishimiye as its official candidate for the 2020 presidential election.
Long before the Congress, participants spent two days of prayer in Gitega during which President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he will leave power to a candidate whom the Lord has already nominated, and who will not encounter obstacles on his course.
Finally during the Congress, the name of General Ndayishimiye was revealed as the official candidate of the CNDD-FDD for the presidential elections on 20 May, 2020.
At the end of negotiations and elections which allowed Nkurunziza to become president, during his first term, Ndayishimiye was Minister of the Interior, and is said to have engineered the decentralization policy.
He was then Advisor to the President on military affairs, then Secretary General of the ruling CNDD-FDD party.
President Nkurunziza’s gesture of letting his party designate his successor for the next election that are much likely to be won by CNDD-FDD has symbolic historical political significance and brings huge changes that benefit the whole country and the region.
Many hopes are envisaged on all levels for more openness with neighbors and the international community with a view of restoring confidence and credibility for an environment more conducive to security, peace and respect for rights.
By appointing another successor for the next presidential election, Pierre Nkurunziza has just proved that he knows how to keep his word and that he is a true patriot concerned with the superior interests of Burundi and the future of the nation.
