Ten bodies of children who drowned when a small boat capsized on the river Nyabarongo last week have been retrieved, Rwanda National Police confirmed on Wednesday.
According to thePolice spokesperson, John Bosco Kabera, the victims’ ages ranging from 11 to 15 have all been identified.
The accident happened when a boat was rented by a local resident for 13 children’s transportation. Tragically, only three children survived out of the total 13 on board.
The judicial police said that the suspects including the owner and the one who rented the boat are facing two charges. These charges include involuntary manslaughter and prohibited work involving a child.
The Police report indicates that a 41-year-old local resident, who is currently in custody, rented a boat to transport 13 children from the village. His intention was to involve them in unloading roofing materials in Ngororero district (Western Rwanda), with the intention of selling them.
