Pope Francis named Archbishop Antoine Kambanda of Kigali Archdiocese as the first Rwandan to become a Cardinal. The surprise announcement was made by the Pope at the Vatican where he named 13 new cardinals on Sunday, October 25, 2020.
The new cardinals were selected from different parts of the world and will be elevated to the new rank in a ceremony on November, 28.
Archbishop Kambanda, 62, has been leading the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kigali since November 2018, previously was the Bishop of Kibungo Diocese since 2013 and has served different positions in the Catholic Church.
No details have been given by the Vatican about the formal ceremony to make the churchmen cardinals, especially in view of travel restrictions involving many countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
