A 48-year-old woman in Rwanda’s Kirehe District has been arrested after her husband died following a domestic dispute, local authorities say.
The incident happened on 16 August in Rwanyamuhanga Cell, Mushikiri Sector, where 49-year-old Maniraguha Jean Claude died.
According to Iyamuremye Antoine, the Executive Secretary of Mushikiri Sector, the couple had been experiencing disagreements for some time, mainly over property.
Iyamuremye said the latest dispute reportedly began after Maniraguha sold a rooster and spent the money on alcohol.
“It appears to have been a conflict over property. The husband sold a rooster and went to spend the money drinking at Pirimusi. When the wife found out, she became angry. She waited until her husband was asleep, then struck him with a hoe handle, and he died,” he said.
The official said local authorities had previously intervened and advised the couple to resolve their disagreements, but the conflicts continued.
The woman has since been arrested as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death continue.
The case comes amid renewed attention on domestic conflicts and the need for early intervention when disputes between couples become persistent.
