Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected across Rwanda during the first 10 days of June 2026, with conditions varying significantly by region, according to a forecast released by the Rwanda Meteorology Agency on May 31, 2026.

The agency projects 10 to 60 millimeters of rainfall between June 1 and 10, slightly above the long-term average for early June. The period is expected to bring three to five rainy days depending on location, influenced by warming sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean associated with El Niño conditions, as well as local weather systems.

The heaviest rainfall is expected in western and northern highland districts, including Rubavu District, Nyabihu District, Musanze District, Burera District and Gakenke District, where totals could reach 45 to 60 millimeters. Parts of Rutsiro District, Ngororero District and northern sections of Gicumbi District, Rulindo District and Muhanga District are also expected to receive similarly high rainfall.

Moderate rainfall of 30 to 45 millimeters is forecast for Kigali City and much of the central and eastern regions, including Nyagatare District, Gatsibo District, Bugesera District and Rwamagana District. Southern Province districts such as Huye District, Nyamagabe District and Nyaruguru District are also expected to fall within this range.

The remainder of the country is expected to receive 10 to 30 millimeters of rainfall.

Daytime temperatures are expected to range from 20°C to 30°C nationwide. The warmest conditions are likely in Kigali City and eastern districts such as Nyagatare District, Gatsibo District, Kayonza District, Kirehe District and Rwamagana District, where highs could reach 30°C.

Cooler daytime highs of 20°C to 22°C are expected in high-altitude areas, including Musanze District, Nyabihu District and Burera District.

Nighttime temperatures are expected to fall to between 10°C and 19°C, with the coldest conditions in northern and southern highland areas such as Nyamagabe District, Nyaruguru District and Musanze District.

Wind conditions are expected to be a key feature of the period. Strong winds of 8 to 12 meters per second are forecast in parts of Karongi District, central Rutsiro District, sections of Nyamasheke District and Rubavu District, as well as localized areas of Ngororero District, Nyabihu District and Burera District.

Moderate to strong winds of 6 to 8 meters per second are expected across much of the eastern and southern regions, including Nyagatare District, Gatsibo District, Kirehe District, Rusizi District and Nyamasheke District, as well as parts of Kayonza District and Ngoma District.

The Rwanda Meteorology Agency urged residents in wind-prone western districts, including Karongi District, Rutsiro District, Nyamasheke District, Rubavu District, Ngororero District and Nyabihu District, to take precautions and follow official guidance to reduce the risk of wind-related damage and localized disruptions.
