President Paul Kagame on Monday received a delegation led by Prince Oheneba Yaw Otchere, ambassador of the Asantehene, the king of the Asante Kingdom, at Village Urugwiro in Kigali.

The meeting focused on strengthening existing relations between Rwanda and the Asante Kingdom, with discussions centered on expanding cooperation in trade, investment and the minerals sector.

The Asante Kingdom, located in southern central Ghana, was founded in the 17th century around 1701 by Osei Tutu I. It is historically known for its wealth in gold, as well as agriculture, commerce and tourism.

Today, the kingdom remains an important cultural and traditional authority in Ghana under the leadership of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The Asantehene serves as both a political and spiritual leader of the Ashanti people, although the role does not carry formal authority within Ghana’s central government.

Rwanda and Ghana maintain strong bilateral relations, particularly in trade and investment.

Rwanda established its embassy in Ghana in 2019, a year before the two countries signed an air services agreement aimed at strengthening connectivity and facilitating trade.

Since then, Rwanda’s national carrier, RwandAir, has operated three weekly flights to Accra, the capital of Ghana.
