Rwanda’s Cabinet has approved plans to revise electricity tariffs for the first time in five years, part of a broader effort to expand power access and ensure a sustainable energy supply.
Meeting Monday and chaired by President Paul Kagame, ministers were told that electricity now reaches 85 percent of households, a dramatic rise from just 2 percent in 2000. Officials said tariff adjustments are needed to maintain reliable service as the country pushes toward universal access.
The Cabinet also reviewed national examination results for the 2024/2025 academic year, noting strong performance in both primary and secondary schools. Authorities attributed the gains to capacity-building initiatives and student engagement. The 2025/2026 school year officially opened on September 8, with parents urged to continue close collaboration with schools to further improve outcomes.
In agriculture, the Cabinet was briefed on preparations for the 2026A planting season. Farmers were encouraged to complete land preparation, sow seeds on time, and use improved inputs such as high-yield seed varieties and fertilizers to secure better harvests.
The meeting also assessed Rwanda’s readiness to host the World Cycling Championship from September 21–28 in Kigali, the first time the global race will be staged in Africa. Preparations are on track, and citizens were encouraged to attend and enjoy the weeklong event.
On environmental policy, ministers endorsed new initiatives to expand forest cover and strengthen biodiversity protection nationwide, including in urban areas. The programs, developed in partnership with households and stakeholders, aim to help Rwanda confront climate change, protect ecosystems, and open new opportunities for sustainable development.
The Cabinet approved a cooperation agreement with African Parks Networks, a conservation organization, and granted Rwandan nationality to new citizens.
Other key decisions included:
- Adoption of a ministerial order establishing codes of conduct and disciplinary committees within the Rwanda Defence Force.
- Authorization of expropriation in Gicumbi District to build a water dam and pipeline serving Nyagatare District.
- Accreditation of two diplomats: Victorino-Nká Obiang Maye as Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea to Rwanda, based in Brazzaville, and Husain Saif Aziz Al-Harthi as Honorary Consul of the Sultanate of Oman in Rwanda.
