Rwanda, Uganda hold discussions to improve bilateral relations

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vincent Biruta, today received his Ugandan counterpart General Abubakhar Odongo Jeje. The two ministers held diplomatic and political consultations to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Uganda.

Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has revealed that the discussions took place on Thursday 1st September 2022 à Kigali.

Below the Joint Statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Rwanda, Honorable Dr Vincent Biruta and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda Honorable General Odongo Jeje Abubakhar held bilateral Diplomatic and Political Consultations, in Kigali-Rwanda, on 1st September 2022.

The Diplomatic and Political consultations between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs is a continuation of the commitment of the Heads of State to further deepen and strengthen the cordial bilateral relations between the two sisterly countries.

Both Ministers acknowledged the ongoing progress made so far to normalize bilateral relations. They reiterated their commitment to focus efforts on the mutual regional security and development issues that impact on the socio-economic welfare of the peoples of the two Countries.

The Ministers appreciated the leadership of both Countries, H.E Paul Kagame, The President of the Republic of Rwanda and H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, The President of the Republic of Uganda for their continued commitment to revive and strengthen bilateral relations. Additionally, the Ministers recognized H.E Paul Kagame’s visit to Uganda and the subsequent H.E Yoweri Museveni’s visit to Rwanda during CHOGM 2022 as a strong signal toward renewed bilateral relations;

The Ministers exchanged views on regional matters relating to security, trade, investment and strategic regional projects;

They agreed to review and revive bilateral cooperation in the different areas of interest by convening the next Joint Permanent Commission between Rwanda and Uganda. he Ministers agreed that the next Joint Permanent Commission will be hosted by the Republic of Rwanda by March 2023; which will focus on critical areas taking into consideration the outcomes of the last Joint Permanent Commission.

The Honorable Dr Vincent Biruta, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Rwanda and The Honorable General Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda expressed gratitude for the steps taken so far to renew good and cordial relations between the two sister countries and remain committed to see the people of both Rwanda and Uganda enjoying the full benefits of the cordial relations.
