After twenty months of the Covid-19 hiatus, it was all fan and excitement at the 2021 Big Ant Studios 7’s rugby competition held at Amahoro stadium over the weekend.
The one-day 7’s tourney attracted fourteen teams including eight men’s teams and six that battled in the women’s category.
The 7’s competition saw teams placed into two groups with the top two from each men’s category advancing through to the semifinal whereas the first teams from each of women’s groups progressed straight to the finale after a round robin contest.
A Thousand Hills Rugby Club clinched the men’s category after thrashing archrival Kigali Sharks by 28-7 while the Muhanga Thunders won the women’s category having equaled Resilience WRC of Rusizi.

Kigali Sharks beat Rubavu Eagles 21-7 to set a final date with 1000 Hills who eliminated Resilience RC 7-0 in the other men’s semi-final.
In the women’s category, Muhanga Thunders overpowered Resilience WRC in the extra time after both sides were level with 5-5.
Carlos Isimbi of 1000 Hills was the star of the day when he scooped the most valuable player in the men’s category.
The women’s Most Valuable Player award went to Odette Ndayishimiye from Resilience WRC was the women’s MVP, while University of Rwanda Rwamagana Campus emerged the most sociable team of the competition in both categories.
The eight men teams that participated in the competition include; Rubavu Black Eagles, Puma RFC, Kigali Sharks RFC, Thousand Hills RFC, Resilience RFC, Muhanga Thunders RFC, Burera Tigers RFC and UR Grizzlies RFC.
Meanwhile, the six women’s teams were; Ruhango Women RFC, Kigali Sharks RFC, Muhanga Thunders RFC, Rubavu Black Eagles, UR College of Medicine and Health Sciences Rwamagana Campus and Resilience RFC.
