The Saharawi Movement for Peace (MSP), which proposes a political alternative to “polisario”, held a virtual Congress last week with José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, former Prime Minister of Spain as “guest of honour”, According to the Europapress Agency,

“Among the speeches delivered by the guests of honour was that of Mr Zapatero, known for his commitment to peace, in which he expressed his unequivocal support for the ideals and values of the Movement”, MSP stressed in a statement published by the Europapress agency on Sunday 04 October 2020.

“Whoever defends the values of peace, coexistence, cooperation and solidarity never betrays,” he said.

The former President of the Spanish Government stressed that the ”MSP” represents a “great hope” for the Saharawis and for the other peoples of the region, because “only dialogue and cooperation can put an end to the difficulties of this people and make their desires for a dignified and prosperous future come true”.  “The international community supports your objectives and I assure you of my efforts and personal support,” he concluded.

The MSP was born out of a declaration by about a hundred Saharawi politicians, published on 22 April, in which they propose themselves as an alternative to the “exhausted” project of the “polisario” front, writes the Spanish press agency.

The MSP includes former “polisario” leaders, as well as descendants of members of the assembly of notables from the Spanish colonial period, as well as Saharawis “from inside and outside the territory”, including from the Tindouf “refugee” camps in Algeria.
