Rwanda and Uganda reaffirmed their commitment to regional security and cooperation during their second “Rwanda and Uganda Cross Border Security Meeting” held on Monday, May 6th, 2024.

High-ranking officials from both countries, including Rwanda’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Clementine Mukeka, and Uganda’s Head of the Department of Peace and Security, Ambassador Joshua Julius Kivuna, participated in the discussions.

The meeting served as a follow-up to the December 2023 meeting held in Kabale, Uganda, which was sanctioned by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. This latest gathering aimed to assess progress made on the measures and decisions outlined in the previous talks.

Mukeka emphasized the importance of the meeting, highlighting the historical, cultural, and economic ties that bind Rwanda and Uganda closer than mere neighbors. She stressed the shared goal of fostering peace, mutual benefit, and prosperity through enhanced cooperation across various sectors.

Mukeka acknowledged the challenges and opportunities that come with shared borders. She emphasized the importance of open communication, information sharing, and collaborative efforts to ensure regional stability and support sustainable development for both nations.

The participation of high-level representatives from various Rwandan and Ugandan institutions underscores the commitment of both countries to building a stronger and more secure future for their citizens.

While no specific details were released regarding the outcomes of the meeting, it is clear that Rwanda and Uganda are making strides towards solidifying their bilateral relations and fostering a more peaceful and prosperous East Africa.
